I Think The Marine Corps Cheated My Daughter
(Holly left for Parris Island eight years ago today)
My daughter is currently at boot camp at MCRD Parris Island. Her joining the Corps was a long process, starting with the Delayed Entry Program while she was still in school. There were many times I accompanied her on visits to her recruiter. She also took part in so many poolee functions I lost count. Yet during all of this one significant detail was overlooked or ignored. This may have been due to an oversight on the part of her recruiter, or perhaps there has been a change in Marine Corps policy. Stay with me as I give you a little history lesson in order for you to understand where I am going with this.
On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that “two Battalions of Marines be raised” for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps came into being inside of a bar. Recruits were drawn in with promises of free beer.
Yet not once during this entire process was my daughter offered a beer! However, in order for her to have the honor of earning the title United States Marine, we are both willing to overlook this minor oversight.
